Election Présidentielle 2007

French Election

The francophile in me is currently enjoying watching the French Presidential election coverage on France 2. Well, France 2 on BBC Parliament.

It certainly puts British elections to shame in terms of it’s ‘watchability’. It’s rather exciting seeing Nicolas Sarkozy, who the exit polls have named the new president of France, being whisked through the streets of Paris followed by around 20 photographers on mopeds. Total and utter chaos, but very exciting.

Sarkozy’s election is a contraversial one. The French either love him or hate him. And those that hate him, really, really loath him with a passion. It’ll be interesting to see how his election will be met by the large immigrant communities on the outskirts of Paris in the next few days.

The BBC are obviously covering the story. The report says that turnout was 85.5%. That’s extraordinary! It’s a good day for democracy, if nothing else.
