Run! Eurovision Cometh!
I don’t care how much street cred I lose (and I have a lot to lose let me tell you), I’m going to say it anyway. I really like Eurovision. I wouldn’t say I love it, but I certainly don’t like to miss the part where to votes are coming in and Terry’s commentary. This evening, in between working on an assignment, I’ve been listening to a few samples of the songs that are represent some of the competing nations on Saturday. You can do the same at the BBC News website. Here’s what I think:
- Germany: Frauen Regier’n Die Welt (Women Rule The World) - Roger Cicero
Wow! The first song I hear and it’s brilliant. It’s an enjoyable big band number sung by the talented Roger Cicero in German, not English. Encouraging so far! - Switzerland: Vampires Are Alive - DJ Bobo
A bit of everything in this one. Parts are typically eurovision, while others are actually pretty catchy and respectable. It’s about Vampires though which is a bit odd. Will probably do well. - Serbia: Molitva (A Prayer) - Marija Serifovic
She sings this ballad rather well. The song is weak though. And boring. I switched off half way through. - Geogia: Visionary Dream - Sopho Khalvshi
Geogia makes it’s debut at Eurovision with quite a unique and interesting number. I think I like it, although I’m not bowled over. - Spain: I Love You Mi Vida - D’Nash
Spain break with tradition and produce a song that’s typically Spanish. No… hang on, that’s what they always do. It’s probably why they won’t win. It’s a weak boy band record. - Greece: Yassou Maria - Sarbel
Like Spain producing a song that’s typically Spanish sounding, Greece does so with a typically Greek sounding record, only it’s sung in English for some reason. It’s fairly catchy and will probably win a lot of support from the voters. - Cyprus: Comme Ci, Comme Ca - Evridiki
Eugh! A rubbish dance song. And inexplicably, it’s in French. - Bulgaria: Water - Elitsa Todorova
Lots of drums and techno. It’s far away from from what we’ve come to expect from Eurovision, so it deserves our respect. It’s still insane garbage though. - Belarus: Work Your Magic - Dmitry Koldun
Musically, it’s very James Bond. Lyrically, it’s nonsense. Nothing special. - Russia: Song #1 - Serebro (Silver)
I got bored with this one. It is very Girls Aloud, but the singing is weak and the song repetative.
There are obviously a lot more songs in Saturday’s final (around 300 I believe), but these are considered the best of them. I agree with the British experts that the German song is very, very good. I may even consider buying it if it were to become available on iTunes. Whether it’ll win or not is anybody’s guess. It’s almost impossible to predict the decision of the voters and it’s normally the song no one even considered that wins. I really hope it’s Germany though. If you’re wondering about the UK’s entry, don’t! It’s an embarassment! A truly awful song. I hope it comes last to prove a point.
