A Bit of Belgium

This is the first in a series of posts about Belgium, one of my favourite countries. Despite only having a population of just over 10 million, it is one of the most misunderstood countries in the world. Ask people what they think of Belgium and most of them will say “boring,” even if they themselves have never been. It’s a shame that this is the defining thought on a country that boasts miles upon mile of unspoilt beaches, some of the best chocolate, beer and cuisine in the world and some of the most relaxed and friendly people.

For a small country, Belgium does very well for itself. It’s true, the weather can be rather changable and mostly wet, but it’s not true that Belgium can’t offer a great holiday or city break. In particular, the coastal region of Flanders in the north provides plenty to see and do. The entire coastline of Belgium is covered by the world’s longest tram line which makes travelling between the different resorts and attractions a doddle. I’ll leave you with a video of a ride on the “kusttram” through the streets of Blankenberge, one of the more popular seaside resorts.

A more detailed review of Belgium follows soon.
