More Wimbledon, More Rain, More News

Serena Williams

This afternoon, while the tennis is suspended for the fiftieth time due to rain, I’ve activated a new theme for this site. This time, I’ve designed the theme from scratch. I’m not absolutely delighted with it, so I’ll be tinkering with it for a while but this is now the way Here To Geneva will look from now on (until I change it again). Obviously, those using RSS readers won’t be able to see what I’m talking about, so why not drop in and take a look.

Wimbledon Round-up

So, we’re into the second week of Wimbledon and it’s officially been the most rain disrupted Championships for 25 years. They’ve been managing to get a few matches finished today, but showers are bubbling up and look set to cause disruption later this afternoon. A match between Nadal and Soderling was finally completed today. The players first appeared on court five days ago, but were called off before they could even get started. Since then, the match was interrupted 8 times. Yesterday, two massive storms rolled through the area, causing organisers to abandon play early. The Wimbledon and Fulham areas of London were coated in a layer of ice from the torrential hail. These really area crazy circumstances.

The image above is taken from an extraordinary match a few days ago between Serena Williams and Daniella Hantuchova. In the second set, Williams experienced severe difficulties with her left leg, almost completely disabling her. Millions around the world watched as she screamed in agony and two trainers, a doctor, two referees, the umpire and Hantuchova assisted and looked on. Incredibly, Williams was saved by a rain break and, upon the player’s return, managed to win the match.

Le Grande Depart

In other news, my quite frankly ridiculous thirst with all things France will be quenched this weekend when the Tour de France starts in London. I’ll be there on Saturday to watch the individual time trials, to soak in the atmosphere and to score some freebies from the publicity caravan and festival village. I’ve always enjoyed watching the Tour in tv, so I’m very excited to be able to experience the Tour for myself for the first time.
