While in Paris, France...

Rugby World Cup 2007

This Friday, France play Argentina in the opening match of the Rugby World Cup 2007. And my god, I’m excited! Probably more so than I have been with any other recent sporting event. For 44 days from Friday, there’ll be more rugby matches than I can possibly watch. On the following Saturday, there’s three consecutive matches starting from midday. I can’t wait!

I’m sure I’ll be writing much more over the next month and a bit, but for now, I thought I’d post my fantasy rugby league team that I’ve just submitted on the official RWC website. If you haven’t done so, and you’re big on your rugby (San for example), then get your team submitted by Friday (Click on ‘Fan Zone’ and follow the links).

Presenting the ‘Bedford Allstars’.

  1. Tonga’uiha S (TGA)
This guy is a legend. He’s built like a tank. Former Bedford player.
  2. Vickery (ENG)
Obligatory England player. This guy’s always reliable.
  3. Roncero (ARG)
Token Argentinean. Their guys on the front row are rock solid.
  4. Thompson (SAM)
I got the website to automatically select someone. I was pleased to get a Samoan.
  5. Chisholm (AUS)
    Seemed like a safe bet.
  6. Sititi (SAM)
    Another randomly selected Samoan.
  7. Parisse (ITA)
    Improved significantly this season.
  8. Naevo (FJI)
    Randomly selected.
  9. Troncon (ITA)
Needs no introduction. Love this guy!
  10. Wilkinson (C) (ENG)
My captain. At his best, he’s unbeatable.
  11. Rokocoko (NZL)
If anyone deserves the word ‘almighty’ before his name, this guy does! Lightning fast!
  12. Dominici (FRA)
    Another hugely talented back.
  13. Lamont R (SCO)
Just recognised his name. I’m sure he won’t let me down.
  14. Pritchard (CAN)
Could be one of the top point scorers of the whole tournament. We’ll see! Current Bedford player.
  15. Robinson (WAL)
I’ve got a scot, may as well have a welshman too.

I’m pretty pleased. I got everyone I wanted and the others I’ve got all seem like good choices. We’ll find out soon enough.

Are you only allowed one All Black? That could be your only excuse for keeping out the best 10 in the world… Dan Carter? Johnny is alright when he’s on his game, but he hasn’t been there since 2003… I think Sivivatu is a better winger, don’t you rate him? Nice team though, even including players from New Zealand B (Samoa) New Zealand C (Tonga), but no one from New Zealand D? (Japan)

Should be a great tournament!

I think you’re allowed two per team. Had I seen Sivivatu in the list, I’d have included him. He’s quite something!

I did weigh up whether to include a Japanese player but no one really sprang to mind.

Fair enough :) good luck against South Africa (for England) and NZ (for Italy) Will you check out any of the games live?

Not in person. Silly really, considering it’s so close. Every single game is live on tv so I’ll watch as many as I can. I guess a lot of the matches will be at unsociable hours for you. Will you be staying up for the NZ Vs Italy match?

I fell asleep at half time! I fear for Portugal…

How bad are the Northern Hemisphere teams?
