The Northern Hemisphere Strikes Back

ARRRGGGHHHH! Something’s definitely not right. This afternoon, England, who’ve quite frankly been awful ever since they won the World Cup four years ago beat Australia in the quarter finals of this year’s World Cup. There was only one try in the whole match and it was Australia’s, but four penalties from the golden boot of Jonny Wilkinson denied them the win. Extraordinary! The final score was 12-10.

It was assumed England’s opponent in the semi finals would be red hot favourites to win, New Zealand. It wasn’t just the experts and media who made this assumption. I did too. I thought the All Blacks were invincible, in a class of their own. That was until five minutes ago, when France beat them. It was another nail-biting match which ran right up until the final whistle. The final act was poignant. The kiwis lost the ball for the final time and France’s Jean-Baptiste Elissalde picked it up and skuttled backwards and sideways to make sure the ball went dead. Like the England Australia match, there was only two points in it. The final score was 20-18.

Oh, and Bedford won yesterday too. What a fantastic weekend of rugby!

Ah well, we’re all still proud of our boys. I actually wasn’t at all gutted. I didn’t expect them to advance further than the group stages, so to come second was amazing.
